Description

The original clown costume was over 30 years old. My daughter needed another clown costume, and so reworked the old satin, which was moth and rat-chewed.

Vision (4) The film follows the restoration of a clown costume. That's a nice, simple idea and simple can be good. But after watching and thinking about this film I realized what I wanted to see was 1) a close look at how bad those rat and moth holes are you mention in the description and 2) the step-by-step instructions on how each was fixed. The film clearly presents an idea, meriting 4 stars, but as you'll see in the other scores doesn't live up to it.

Originality (2) I would call this film an instructional sewing video without the instructions. I can see by the ending that the costume has been restored but I don't know what went into that restoration other than cutting and sewing. I haven't learned anything other than how to put the costume on. With the most basic instructions I would say 3 stars, but without them I have to say 2.

Technique (3) There's a few bits of “editing magic” here – one with slow-motion and one where the costume seems to jump of its own volition into the restorer's hands, by playing the video backwards. I'm guessing most video editing software these days will do those tricks at the click of a button? Otherwise it's all basic near-the-shoulder shots watching them work. Nothing bad, nothing fancy, so 3 stars.

Impact (2) As far as I know these are very basic sewing techniques and very basic sewing work. Is satin difficult to work with? Was the costume in really bad shape? I don't know. I get to see the finished costume but there wasn't enough shots revealing the time-worn beginning to see what changed. The music sounds like something epic is happening and would give some other already-epic film a little boost of impact, but for this film feels undeserved and almost pretentious. That's the danger of choosing epic music for mundane activities. The ending does feel like a culmination of work so I'll say 2 stars instead of 1.
